Most people don’t really believe that they can have anything they want in life.

We want to believe, but it feels like a fairy tale we were told as children. Our visions of successful careers, fulfilling relationships, or financial freedom can often feel too good to be true.

But the truth is that you can have everything you want—if you’re smart about it. It’s all about chasing your goals with determination, instead of waiting for them to come to you.

If you’re trying to inject a little more shamelessness into your goals, here are our 5 tips to be successful in life:

 

  1. Don’t accept your situation.

Your future is not dictated by your present circumstances. When you live those circumstances day in and day out, it seems as if they shape your life. You may feel as though things will stay the same forever—but that doesn’t need to be the case.

There’s a famous saying: “If you don’t like where you are, move. You’re not a tree.” This is a good tip to keep in mind as you reach for your goals: don’t allow yourself to fall for the trap of settling for less, based on what you have now.

 

  1. Know what you want.

It’s impossible to find a destination on a map if you don’t know the address. Get clear on your goals, and work on directing yourself toward them.

This doesn’t mean imagining something vague like “make a lot of money” or “climb the corporate ladder.” Be specific. Give yourself a purpose, a deadline, a strategy: “By the end of the year, I want to be making $1,000 more per month by finding more clients for my consulting business.”

 

  1. Stop waiting for the magic “hack.”

We all dream of stumbling onto success overnight. We hope that we’ll find an easy, secret “hack” to success. After all, working constantly to reach our goals doesn’t sound fun, so we keep one eye out for the “easy way out.” But that’s not how goals work, and letting yourself be distracted by looking for shortcuts will only make it harder to focus on your vision.

 

  1. Make regular effort.

Take one step toward your dreams every day, and make it automatic. Think of it this way: if you’re saving money to buy something, the best practice is to set up automatic withdrawals from your checking to your savings account. Eventually, you’ll reach the desired amount.

The same is true of your life and your habits. If you move forward systematically and strategically every day, you’ll move that much closer to the life you want every day.

 

  1. Be shameless

Our attitude is linked to how we behave. And our behavior is linked to our success. When you’re shameless about going after what you want, when you do what you want for you and for no one else, you give yourself permission to commit fully to the work. That positive attitude, that willingness to give it your all, day in and day out, is what helps you make it happen.
